Amazon FBA fees look simple on a rate card and get messy in a real P&L. Between referral fees, fulfillment fees, storage, inbound placement, low inventory fees and a fuel and logistics surcharge, a single unit can pick up six or seven separate charges before you count ads. This guide walks through every FBA fee a US seller needs to model going into 2027, what changed in 2026, and what to check in Seller Central before you price your next shipment. Rates move, so treat the figures here as a planning baseline and confirm them against the current fee schedule and the Revenue Calculator.

The fees that make up an FBA unit cost

Referral fee

The referral fee is a percentage of the item's selling price, charged on every sale. Based on published 2026 rate cards, most categories sit at 15 percent with a minimum per item, consumer electronics and computers at 8 percent, and categories such as apparel and jewelry use tiered rates by price band. Amazon said US referral and FBA fees did not increase in 2025, and third party summaries of the 2026 schedule describe referral percentages as largely unchanged. Always check your own category in Seller Central, because tier breakpoints are where margin surprises hide.

FBA fulfillment fee

This covers picking, packing, shipping and customer service for each unit. It depends on size tier, weight and, since January 15, 2026, selling price bands in some tiers. Amazon described the 2026 change as an average increase of $0.08 per unit sold, effective January 15, 2026, with at least 90 days notice before increases. Averages hide the spread: a small light product may barely move, while larger items can move by tens of cents.

Fuel and logistics surcharge

Starting April 17, 2026, Amazon added a 3.5 percent surcharge on FBA fulfillment fees in the US and Canada. It reached Buy with Prime and Multi-Channel Fulfillment from May 2, 2026. Amazon estimated it at about $0.17 per unit on average for US FBA. It is calculated on the fulfillment fee, not the sale price. Amazon calls it temporary but has given no end date and has said it remains in place until further notice, so assume it stays in your 2027 models until you see otherwise.

Holiday peak fulfillment fees

A peak fulfillment fee period runs from October 15, 2026 through January 14, 2027, with regular rates resuming January 15, 2027. The 3.5 percent surcharge applies on top of the peak fee. If you sell low priced items in Q4, rerun margins for this window specifically.

Storage fees

Storage is where slow moving inventory quietly eats profit. See the dedicated breakdown in our Amazon storage fees guide for the full schedule. The short version:

  • Monthly storage is billed per cubic foot on average daily volume. Widely published 2026 figures put standard size at $0.78 per cubic foot from January to September and $2.40 from October to December, and oversize at $0.56 and $1.40. Some sources list slightly different off-peak numbers, so verify on Amazon's current schedule.
  • The aged inventory surcharge starts at 181 days in FBA and climbs steeply after 270 days.
  • A storage utilization surcharge targets sellers holding far more weeks of cover than they sell.

Inbound, prep and defect fees

Inbound placement fee

If you send inventory to one inbound location instead of letting Amazon split it across fulfillment centers, you pay a per unit placement fee that varies by size, weight and region. Rates vary by split option, size and weight, and one published 2026 breakdown lists standard size fees of roughly $0.12 to $0.68 per unit. Amazon optimized splits carry no placement fee but need enough cartons per item. Compare the placement fee against the cost of shipping to several locations yourself.

Prep and labeling

Amazon stopped prepping and labeling US FBA inventory on January 1, 2026. That work now sits with you or a prep center, and inbound defect fees for non compliant units rose sharply. A prep partner usually costs less than a defect fee, so build prep into landed cost.

Fees that punish inventory mistakes

Low inventory level fee

If an FNSKU drops under roughly 28 to 35 days of supply (sources differ on the exact threshold), a per unit fee applies. Measurement is per FNSKU, and the amount depends on days of cover and size. Grocery is exempt. Stockouts also cost you rank, so the fee is the smaller problem.

Returns processing fee

Amazon charges a returns processing fee in high return categories, with apparel and shoes handled separately from other categories. Check Seller Central for your category's rule and rate.

Removal and disposal fees

Removing or disposing of units is charged per unit as processed. Do this before units cross an aged inventory threshold, not after.

A simple per unit model

Build one row per SKU with these columns: landed cost, referral fee, fulfillment fee, 3.5 percent surcharge, monthly storage times expected months on shelf, inbound placement or prep, expected returns cost, and ad spend per unit. Then stress test three cases: Q4 storage and peak fees, a 120 day sell through, and a 200 day sell through. Any SKU that is only profitable in the best case is a candidate for repricing, bundling or liquidation.

Tools that help: the Revenue Calculator and the Fee and Economics Preview report in Seller Central, plus the options in our roundup of the best Amazon seller tools. If margins are thin, the lever is often the listing, not the fee. A stronger listing optimization tool workflow can lift conversion enough to offset a few cents of fee growth.

The GTM angle

Fee changes are one of the best trigger events in this market. Every announcement, from the January 15 fulfillment update to the April surcharge to the Q4 peak window, gives sellers a reason to reopen their numbers, and gives you a reason to reach them.

If you sell software, analytics, prep, 3PL, or agency services to Amazon brands, build outbound around the fee event instead of a generic pitch:

  • Trigger based cold email. Send within days of a fee announcement with one specific line: "Your large standard SKUs picked up the 3.5 percent surcharge. We found X in avoidable fees for brands your size." Specific beats clever.
  • ICP segmentation by pain. Segment by fee exposure: heavy oversize sellers care about fulfillment tiers, slow movers care about aged inventory, low price sellers care about price band changes. One offer per segment.
  • Offers that fit. A free fee audit, a SKU level margin report, or a restock plan before peak converts better than a demo request.
  • Timing. Send in the 90 day notice window and again before the peak window.

Source the lists from our seller directory, keep the sequence short, and model what a booked call is worth with the cold email ROI calculator. Pair outbound with the Amazon sales calendar so your sends land before seasonal fee spikes.
