How to Calculate Cold Email ROI
Cold email ROI comes down to a chain of rates. Multiply volume by each step in the funnel, then compare the revenue to what the program costs.
The formula
Emails sent, times reply rate, times positive share, times meeting rate gives meetings booked. Meetings, times close rate, gives deals. Deals, times average client value, gives revenue.
ROI is revenue minus program cost, divided by program cost.
A worked example
Send 1,000 emails a day over 22 sending days: 22,000 emails. At a 1% reply rate that is 220 replies. If 5% are positive, you get 11 leads. If 40% of those book a meeting, that is about 4 meetings. At a 20% close rate, roughly 1 deal. With a client value of $10,000, that is about $8,800 of projected revenue a month.
These are conservative planning rates, not guarantees. Replace them with your own data as you collect it.
Where the numbers move most
Targeting and offer quality change the reply and positive rates. Deal size and close rate decide how much each meeting is worth. Volume only helps if the earlier rates hold.
